Block 1 of 4
Understanding AI & Prompting
What is Artificial Intelligence? How do language models work? And how do you write good prompts?
Learning objectives
- Explain what Artificial Intelligence is and how language models work
- Distinguish good prompts from bad ones
- Write your own prompts using the KLAR principle
- Identify limits and risks of AI in the workplace
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) describes computer systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence — for example, understanding text, answering questions, or recognizing images.
In commerce, you already encounter AI today: chatbots in customer service, automatic product descriptions in online shops, or demand forecasts in purchasing. Language models like ChatGPT or Claude can understand and generate text — they are your tool to work more efficiently.
AI doesn't replace you — it's a tool. Like a calculator: you need to know which calculation to enter. The AI handles the execution.
What is Prompting?
A prompt is the instruction you give to an AI tool. The better your prompt, the better the result. The KLAR principle helps you:
• K — Context: Describe the situation
• L — Length & Format: How long should the answer be?
• A — Task: What exactly should the AI do?
• R — Role: What role should the AI take?
Write a prompt for a product description
Use the KLAR principle: Context, Length, Task, Role
Prompt Tips for the Workplace
Avoid vague instructions like "Write something about products". Be specific instead:
• Instead of: "Write an email" → "Write a friendly response to a customer complaint about a delayed delivery. The customer's name is Mr. Miller, the order number is 12345."
• Instead of: "Explain accounting" → "Explain to a wholesale trade apprentice in 3 sentences what a balance sheet is."
